CAROLYN HYDE

Carolyn Hyde is a Calgary-based artist whose abstract landscapes are inspired by her Saskatchewan prairie roots. After a long career in graphic design, she returned to painting 18 years ago and now happily spends time in her studio, creating expressive works that explore colour, texture, and memory.

Growing up in Saskatchewan shaped the way I see the world—big skies, open horizons, and the quiet beauty found in everyday landscapes. Those early impressions continue to influence everything I create.

My abstract paintings are not literal depictions of place, but emotional responses to it. Working intuitively with acrylic and mixed media, I build layered surfaces of color and texture that suggest fields, skies, and distant horizons without defining them. Each piece begins with a memory or feeling and evolves through experimentation and play.

I’m drawn to the idea that a place can live in you long after you’ve left it. My abstract landscapes explore that space between memory and imagination, inviting viewers to bring their own experiences into the work.

When I’m not in the studio, I love spending time in the mountains with family and friends, traveling whenever I can, or heading east for a prairie road trip.
